Project DetailsDescription
This project, completed in 2007, assessed the market for improved transit service in the Village.
Current Activities
The Village of Justice has installed sidewalks along 79th Street from 88th Avenue to Roberts Road, and on Roberts Road from 79th Street to 87th Street. Two new bus shelters, four new benches, and two crosswalks have been added to improve access to Pace buses along 79th Street. Additionally, the Village has applied for Safe Routes to Schools funds for additional sidewalk improvements.

The RTA participated in the transit component of the McHenry County comprehensive multi-modal transportation and land use plan for the county. The transit component identified existing transit service, explored transit-related land use, service innovations, and assessed fixed route service alternatives.
Current Activities
This project was completed in December 2004. McHenry County advanced the general recommendations contained in this plan and funded a more detailed, transit-focused study in 2005. The subsequent plan provides a roadmap to implementation of short, mid and long-term transit improvements for the County to follow. The County has in place an Implementation Task Force that guides the County's efforts related to transit.

Description
Called the "Queen Suburb of Chicago" by early realtors, Western Springs is known as a community with lovely homes, great neighborhoods, and a strong sense of community. It also has a wonderful, small downtown with unique restaurants and shops centered on a Metra commuter rail station. To maintain and enhance this unique core of community life, in 2011 the Village crafted a Downtown Redevelopment Plan. The planning process involved an extensive public participation process, including a community survey, participatory workshops, a temporary storefront office for walk-in conversations about downtown, direct interviews and meetings with property owners and developers, and oversight by a steering committee. The intensive process resulted in a Plan that was adopted by the Village Board on August 22 by Ordinance 11-2643 as an amendment to the Village's Comprehensive Plan. Highlights of the plan include a wayfinding system, a renovation strategy for the overall streetscape, identification of nine potential redevelopment sites, creation of design guidelines, façade renovation sketches, implementation strategies, a marketing and promotions strategy, and examination of parking demand and identification of parking improvements. Current Activities
Construction completed in 2020 of Foxford Station, a 28 unit condominium development with 3,800 square feet of ground-floor commercial space at Wolf Road and Burlington, across the street from the Metra station. A developer plans to break ground in the fall of 2022 on a 10-unit condominium development on Hillgrove Ave., between Franklin and Howard Avenues. Description
This study recommends the redevelopment of the Village's business district using the Metra station as the anchor, while placing emphasis on the proximity of the harbor to downtown.
Current Activities
This project was completed in January 2005. Per a recommendation in the plan, the Village enhanced the streetscape along 7th Street in the TOD area in 2010 with funding assistance from ITEP. Currently, the Village is exploring ways to market their harbor and adjacent proximity to Lake Michigan as a destination and development opportunity for condos, hotel and retail. The Village was chosen as part of the 2012 RTA Community Planning Program for assistance revising their zoning code in the TOD area. Description
This project developed strategies to increase transit usage along Cicero Avenue from Midway Airport in Chicago south to I-294 in Alsip. The study addressed mobility and accessibility through a comprehensive transportation and transit analysis, recommended strategies for economic revitalization along the corridor and developed a detailed implementation plan. Description
The RTA will provide assistance to the Village of University Park with identifying a financial strategy to implement the recommendations contained in their newly completed TOD Plan. The RTA will assist the Village with analyzing the plan recommendations, reviewing funding and financing options to spur investment, and recommend a financial strategy that will position the Village for future development at the University Park Metra station. Description
This project will create a transit-oriented development plan for an approximate ½ mile radius of the future relocated and elevated Skokie-Dempster Station on the CTA Yellow Line. The CTA is currently conducting an Alternatives Analysis to extend the Yellow Line from the current terminus at Skokie-Dempster to Old Orchard Road. If the line is extended, the existing Skokie-Dempster Station will be elevated near its current location. The new elevation presents an opportunity to improve circulation around the station where the at-grade tracks and station currently act as a physical barrier limiting development. The goal of the project is to create a circulation plan, a corresponding market study, and land use analysis for the Skokie-Dempster Station area.
Current Activities
The plan has been finalized. The RTA will offer implementation assistance as needed.
In 2015, Skokie received CMAQ program funding, via the RTA's Access to Transit Improvement Program, for pedestrian access improvements and additional bicycle parking at the Dempster Station. In 2016, the Village announced that a Target store will be built on a formerly Village-owned property adjacent to the Dempster station. It is expected to be open in late 2017.
