Description
This study examined ways to increase usage of the station, increase access to the station by alternative modes of transportation, enhance transfers between modes at the station, and integrate with development plans.
Current Activities

This project was completed in May 2005. In late November 2011, it was announced that the West Cook County Housing Collaborative received a nearly $3 million grant for its transit-oriented development strategy to update comprehensive plans and to create a sustainable transit-oriented development fund for the communities of Bellwood, Berwyn, Forest Park, Maywood and Oak Park. The communities are completed Comprehensive Plans that include recommendations for priority redevelopment parcels in each community's TOD area. 

Many development projects have been completed in the Village's TOD areas. Construction was completed on a 21-story mixed-use building at Lake Street and Forest Avenue, called Vantage Oak Park, in summer of 2016 with the first units occupied in July. The development includes 270 rental apartments, 25,000SF of ground-level retail and an integrated parking garage with 288 residential spaces and 300 public spaces. Another mixed-use residential, retail and parking project, called Oak Park Station, opened in late 2017 on the Village-owned Westgate site between Lake Street and North Boulevard just east of Harlem Avenue. Oak Park Station features a 20-story tower and five-story building that include 270 rental apartments, 28,000 square feet of retail and a five-story parking garage with 428 spaces for residential, retail, and public use. Additionally, a new transit-oriented development on the southeast corner of South Boulevard and Harlem Avenue was completed in 2019. The building, known as Eleven 33, is a mixed-use structure consisting of approximately 263 rental apartments, 10,000 square feet of retail and a 400 space parking garage. These new developments encourage increased ridership on all available transit services in the downtown area by adding a significant number of residential units within walking distance of CTA, Metra and Pace service. 

The Village is also planning an extension of the Marion Street streetscape improvements west on South Boulevard to Harlem Avenue to enhance pedestrian and bicycle mobility and access to surrounding transit service. These improvements would include wider sidewalks, shorter intersection crosswalk distances improved lighting and public seating. The project is partially funded through the Transportation, Community and System Preservation Program (TCSP).

Description

The service provides expanded dial-a-ride transportation in Lake County to persons with disabilities and older adults residing in central Lake County. Five municipalities and Lake County sponsor the project.

Current Activities

In May 2022, Lake County combined and expanded the Central and West projects into a countywide service.

Description

This project included a transit market and facilities assessment of the I-294 Tri-State corridor from 159th Street Interchange in Markham to the Balmoral Interchange in Rosemont that encompasses a 5-mile radius on either side of the corridor. The assessment identified transit markets along I-294 to inform where future routes and investments in transit infrastructure could be made when the Tri-State is rebuilt, providing incentives for commuters to use public transit.

Current Activities

Preferred service concepts and station concepts were documented in a report pushlished December 2021. The final report can be found under Related Studies. The RTA will monitor for implementation of the report recommendations.

Description

This project included the installation of a five foot wide sidewalk along the south side of US30 / Lincoln Highway in the Village of Park Forest from Orchard Drive east to the Village limits at Rockwell Street, and then south along an undeveloped right-of-way to connect to an existing sidewalk in a residential neighborhood on Farragut Street. This is a segment of 2,425 linear feet and is the final segment of a greater project to build needed sidewalk connections along US30 from the eastern Village limits to the 211th Street Metra station.

Description

The RTA partnered with the City of Crystal Lake to create a transit-oriented development plan for the areas surrounding the Crystal Lake and Pingree Road Metra stations. The project created a development strategy for increasing the density in these areas with the goals to strengthen pedestrian walkability and to expand mixed use and transit supportive land uses for increased travel efficiency.

Current Activities

The plan was adopted by Crystal Lake City Council on September 7, 2021. The RTA will monitor for implementation activity.

In 2022 construction commenced to build a new multi-family development at the southwest corner of E. Crystal Lake Avenue and S. Main Street. The community will include 48 apartments and 51 townhouses just a short walk from the Crystal Lake Metra rail station.

Description

This project will repair a gap in the sidewalk connectivity along Wolf Road near North Avenue. Repairs will allow pedestrians to directly cross the intersection of Wolf Road and an access driveway to a shopping center. This section of Wolf Road is served by Pace Route 309 and Routes 318 and 320 operate nearby on North Avenue. Two bus shelters will also be constructed at the stops just to the south of this intersection as part of the project.

Consultant has been selected to complete Phase II Engineering. Waiting for IDOT to approve the engineering agreement.

Description

This project analyzed transit options and opportunities in three neighborhoods in the City of Chicago where Chicago Housing Authority properties and adjacent city and privately-owned properties are being transformed into mixed-income communities. The sites include the Oakland community on the near south side, the Lake Street corridor on the near west side, and the Cabrini-Green redevelopment area on the near north side.

Current Activities

Near North Study Area
The City of Chicago renovated the 70-year old Clark/Division Red Line CTA station by rebuilding the original 1940s mezzanine and platform and built a new mezzanine at LaSalle Street and Division, providing improved access to the station from the Near North study area. The new 8000-foot mezzanine entrance at LaSalle is equipped with two elevators, one between the entrance and the mezzanine and another connecting the mezzanine to the platform.

The City is also allocating CMAQ funding to construct pedestrian access improvements at the North and Clybourn Red Line station, improving transit access in the Near North study area. A new Target store at Larabee and Division opened in 2013 on 3.6 acres of former CHA land. Also, the New City mixed-use development opened in 2015 on 8.5 acres of land at Clybourn and Halsted and includes 360,000 square feet of shops, 199 apartments and 40,000 square feet of medical office space. Several multi-family developments have been constructed in the study area especially along Division and Orleans. In 2018 the long-standing Wayman AME Church, which served Cabrini Green residents for many years, was sold for more residential redevelopment.

Near West Study Area
The new Damen Green Line station on Lake Street is under construction. The Chicago Bulls have opened new practice facilities as well as restaurants, bars, a team store and event space in the parking lot east of the United Center as an economic development driver for the area around the stadium. The CTA used $23M in TIF funds to reconstruct the Medical District Blue Line Station, serving the Near West study area. The station house was reconstructed, an elevator was added and ramps to the platform were rebuilt. All three entrances--at Ogden Avenue, Damen Avenue and Paulina Street--are now accessible. Other renovations include lighting upgrades, additional security cameras, CTA bus and train tracker displays and repairs to the station platform canopy.
In 2017 new multifamily developments began taking shape in the study area, including the construction of affordable senior housing on the SE corner of Paulina and Washington, as well as the announcement by the Illinois Housing Development Authority of a federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credits award to construct the Warren Apartments, a mixed-income, 75 unit apartment building at Madison and Ashland.

Mid-South Study Area
In 2013, the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) and the Bronzeville Alliance completed a land use plan intended to drive economic development along three corridors (43rd, 47th and 51st Streets) and their corresponding CTA Green Line Stations utilizing recommendations found within the Reconnecting Neighborhoods plan.

Description
This City of Chicago-sponsored study encompassed five Metra stations along the Milwaukee District West Line within the City of Chicago (Grand / Cicero, Hanson Park, Galewood, Mars, and Montclare). The study provided recommendations for potential transit-oriented development near each station.
Current Activities
The final report was approved by the City's Plan Commission in December 2012. The Implementation Task Force is currently focusing on the creation, installation and maintenance of wayfinding signs, a main recommendation of the study.

Description

This dial-a-ride service will operate weekdays in Antioch, Avon, Grant, and Lake Villa townships. A portion of the service will be a flexible route connecting three Metra stations on the NCS Line and Milwaukee District - North Line with residential areas to offer greater access to employment opportunities primarily for individuals with limited mobility and other transit dependent populations. The service expanded its boundaries in December 2012 to include Waconda and Fremont Townships. Lake County implemented the service January 11, 2010.

The operating service provided 588 trips in April 2022.

Description

This project funded the installation of new shared lane markings (AKA sharrows), allowing the Village to implement low-cost recommendations from its Master Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan. The project included the installation of covered bike parking and wayfinding at the Northbrook Metra station.
