Project DetailsDescription
This project evaluated and recommended improvements to bus service in McHenry County as part of the County Long-Range Transportation Planning efforts. Through this study, services were examined and effective strategies and improved coordination opportunities were identified. Short term and long term service options were recommended.
Current Activities
This project is complete and implementation activities are underway. Pace has implemented the fixed route service recommendations. These recommendations include: 1. A restructure of Route 806 to service Route 31 and the heavily utilized activity generators such as big box retail stores, a senior center, and a social service center serving families. 2. A restructure of Route 807 to discontinue the loop around Wonder Lake (resulting in a 20 minute travel time reduction) and simplify routing in downtown McHenry. And, 3. A restructure of Route 808 to discontinue deviations.
These resulting improvements have allowed ridership to remain steady, while providing cost savings to Pace. Ridership on the County¿s MC Ride service continues to grow in both service area (added Village of Lakewood and Nunda Township) and ridership (reaching 90,000 trips). Additionally, Pace is investigating a fixed bus route on the north portion on Randall Road, as recommended in the plan. Funding Amounts by Source

This is an existing Section 5310 project. New to this application, and included in the recommended award, is capital funding to develop a trip scheduling and payment app for riders, eliminating the need to call the Pace call center or pay in cash. This project, by initially integrating the services of four dial-a-ride projects, now serves a geographic area covering seven communities, providing transportation services primarily for older adults and individuals with disabilities. This project will continue to integrate and coordinate dial-a-ride services currently being provided throughout McHenry County. Dial-a-ride service for seniors and people with disabilities is also provided throughout Greenwood, Dorr, Grafton, Nunda, McHenry, Marengo and Riley Townships. Three service extensions are included to serve the Fox Lake Metra Station, Valley-Hi nursing home/McHenry County Division of Transportation, and the Park and Ride lot in the Village of Lake in the Hills. The RTA participated in the transit component of the McHenry County comprehensive multi-modal transportation and land use plan for the county. The transit component identified existing transit service, explored transit-related land use, service innovations, and assessed fixed route service alternatives.
Current Activities
This project was completed in December 2004. McHenry County advanced the general recommendations contained in this plan and funded a more detailed, transit-focused study in 2005. The subsequent plan provides a roadmap to implementation of short, mid and long-term transit improvements for the County to follow. The County has in place an Implementation Task Force that guides the County's efforts related to transit.

Description
The RTA assisted the Village of Richton Park to update to the Village’s 2004 transit-oriented development plan (TOD), encompassing the 1/2 mile area surrounding the Richton Park Metra station. The goals for the project were to update, consolidate, and refresh the 2004 plan with new recommendations, imagery, and graphics. The plan included a modernized strategy to offer more housing options and create a new public open space near the Metra station. The updated plan focuses on ways to retain existing character, celebrate the Village’s history, and create an appealing Town Center for the community. Current Activities
Work on the project began in March 2023 with meetings among the project team and the project’s Steering Committee. Work on the project continued throughout 2023 with community engagement, existing conditions analysis, and development of draft recommendations. The project team prepared a draft plan for Village staff, Steering Committee, and Planning and Zoning Commission review and made revisions based on comments received. The plan was approved by the Village Board of Trustees at their April 22, 2024 meeting. You can read the plan in the "Related Reports" section of this page. Funding Amounts by Source
